Emotional Meditation—By Micah Siemens
The psalmist continues by describing what first stirred the unrest within his soul. As he observed the lives of the wicked, he noticed how free they seemed from the hardships that burden others. “They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong.” Their lives appear untouched by the frailty and anxiety that so often mark the human condition. While others labor under heavy loads, they move through life with a troubling ease.

This appearance of comfort deepens the psalmist’s frustration. “They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills.” It seems as though the ordinary trials that discipline the hearts of many simply pass them by. The wicked seem shielded from the very difficulties that often draw the faithful closer to God. To the psalmist, it looks as though injustice has woven itself into the fabric of everyday life.
From this ease grows a dangerous pride. “Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence.” Their prosperity becomes an ornament, something worn openly and without shame. Instead of humility, their success produces arrogance. Violence and oppression become garments they wear as if they were signs of strength rather than stains upon the soul.
The corruption spreads from their actions into their words. “They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression.” Their voices carry the tone of those who believe themselves untouchable. They mock others, speak cruelly, and wield their influence without restraint. Even heaven is not spared from their contempt. “Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.”
The section closes with a painful observation: their influence draws others in. People watch their success and begin to question the value of faithfulness. “They say, ‘How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?’” The prosperity of the wicked begins to erode the confidence of the community. To the psalmist, it seems as though those who disregard God live in ease while their wealth and power continue to grow—an unsettling picture that leaves the heart searching for answers.
