Emotional Meditation—By Micah Siemens
“Will You work wonders for the dead? Shall the dead arise and praise You?” As we move forward in Psalm 88 I realize just why this is one of the most sorrowful psalms in Scripture. Unlike many other psalms of lament, it offers little relief from the darkness the writer feels. Even with all the melancholy questions asked, though it is in his anguish, the psalmist continues to direct his questions toward God. His words reveal a heart that still longs for fellowship with the Lord despite overwhelming suffering. Believers often experience seasons when prayers seem unanswered and hope feels distant. This verse reminds us that bringing honest questions before God is not a sign of weak faith but of a relationship that refuses to let go, even in the midst of pain.

“Shall Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? Or Your faithfulness in the place of destruction?” The psalmist reflects on the precious realities of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness. He fears that if death overtakes him, he will no longer be able to testify publicly to the goodness of God among the living. His cry reveals a deep desire not merely to survive but to continue glorifying the Lord. Every believer has been given opportunities to declare God’s faithfulness through words, actions, and daily living. While life may bring discouragement and hardship, each day remains a gift through which God’s love can be displayed to a watching world.
“Shall Your wonders be known in the dark?” The darkness described here is both physical and emotional. The psalmist feels surrounded by circumstances that obscure God’s presence and make His works difficult to see. Many believers can identify with such moments. Trials, grief, and uncertainty can cast long shadows across the heart. Yet Scripture consistently teaches that God is at work even when His activity is hidden from our sight. What seems like darkness to us is never darkness to Him. The Lord continues accomplishing His purposes, sustaining His people, and demonstrating His power in ways that often become clear only in hindsight.
“And Your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?” The psalmist fears being forgotten, but the larger testimony of Scripture assures God’s people that they are never beyond His notice or care. The Lord’s righteousness remains constant even when circumstances appear confusing and unresolved. For those walking through difficult seasons, Psalm 88 offers comfort not by minimizing suffering but by showing that God welcomes the cries of the hurting. The psalm teaches that faith can endure even when answers are absent and emotions are heavy. The God who hears the questions of His people is the same God who remembers them, sustains them, and ultimately brings them into the light of His presence.
