“They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast” The psalmist now turns from pleading for God’s justice to describing the character of those who oppose Him. Their hearts are revealed by their words. Pride overflows from their mouths in arrogant speech, and they boast as though they are beyond the reach of God or man. Throughout Scripture, arrogance is never merely a matter of attitude; it is evidence of a heart that has exalted itself above the Lord. Such people measure success by power rather than righteousness and speak as though they alone determine what is right. Yet every proud word spoken in defiance of God is heard by the One who weighs every heart. While human arrogance may seem impressive for a moment, it is fleeting before the eternal majesty of the Lord, who humbles the proud and gives grace to the humble.
“They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage” Pride inevitably leads to oppression. Those who reject God’s authority often turn their strength against those who belong to Him. The psalmist grieves not only over personal suffering but over the affliction of God’s covenant people. The Lord’s children have never been strangers to persecution, whether through violence, injustice, ridicule, or discrimination. Yet this verse also offers quiet comfort, for Israel is called “your people” and “your heritage.” God’s people are not forgotten victims abandoned to their circumstances; they remain His treasured possession. Every burden they carry is known to Him, every wound is seen by Him, and every injustice committed against them touches the heart of their faithful Shepherd. The enemies of God’s people may believe they are acting without consequence, but they are, in reality, opposing the very ones whom the Lord calls His own.
“They kill the widow and the sojourner, and murder the fatherless” The depth of human wickedness is seen most clearly in its treatment of the vulnerable. Widows, strangers, and orphans represented those with the least earthly protection, and throughout Scripture God repeatedly declares His special concern for them. The wicked reveal the hardness of their hearts by preying upon those who cannot defend themselves. What they view as weakness, God regards with compassion. His justice is never indifferent to the suffering of the helpless. This passage reminds believers that the Lord not only defends His truth but also cares deeply for those who are overlooked, forgotten, or mistreated by society. His heart is always inclined toward mercy, and His people are called to reflect that same compassion in a world that often values power over kindness.
“And they say, ‘The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive’” Here we find the greatest deception of the wicked. Their violence is fueled by the false belief that God neither sees nor cares about what they do. Whenever people convince themselves that heaven is silent, they feel free to live without restraint. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. The God of Jacob is never blind to injustice, nor is He absent from the affairs of His creation. Every hidden act, every whispered threat, every tear of the oppressed, and every proud declaration is fully known to Him. Though His judgment is not always immediate, His knowledge is complete and His justice certain. The silence of God should never be mistaken for His absence, nor should His patience be confused with approval.
Psalm 94:4–7 exposes both the arrogance of the wicked and the comforting reality of God’s unfailing awareness. Though evil often boasts loudly and appears to prosper, it cannot escape the all-seeing eyes of the Lord. He knows His people, treasures them as His inheritance, and watches over the vulnerable with perfect compassion. The believer need not despair when injustice seems unchecked, for the Judge of all the earth misses nothing and forgets no one. The God who hears every cry will one day silence every boast, vindicate His people, and establish His perfect justice forever. Until that day, we walk by faith, trusting that the Lord sees what others overlook and will accomplish all His righteous purposes in His perfect time.
