“He has broken my strength in midcourse; he has shortened my days” The psalmist acknowledges the painful reality of human weakness and the frailty of life. He feels as though his strength has been cut short before he has reached the end of his journey, reminding us that our lives and abilities remain entirely dependent upon God. There are seasons when circumstances leave us feeling exhausted, as though the strength we once possessed has suddenly disappeared. Yet even in such moments, the Lord is not absent. He remains sovereign over every season of our lives, and our weakness does not diminish His power. When our own strength fails, we are invited to rest more deeply in the God whose strength never falters and whose purposes cannot be interrupted.
“O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days—you whose years endure throughout all generations!” The psalmist brings his fear of death directly before the Lord, pleading for mercy while contrasting his short and uncertain life with God’s everlasting existence. This prayer reminds us that God welcomes the honest fears of His children. We do not need to hide our anxieties about the future or pretend that we are stronger than we are. The Lord already knows the deepest concerns of our hearts, and He invites us to place them before Him in faith. Though our days may seem painfully brief, our hope rests in the eternal God whose years never come to an end. He holds our times in His hands, and nothing can separate His children from His faithful care.
“Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands” In the midst of his personal frailty, the psalmist turns his attention to the greatness of the Creator. The God who formed the earth and stretched out the heavens is infinitely greater than the circumstances that overwhelm us. His power is not diminished by our weakness, and His purposes do not depend upon the strength of His servants. This truth ultimately points us to Jesus Christ, through whom all things were created and through whom all things are being reconciled to God. The One who entered our weakness, took upon Himself human flesh, and endured death on our behalf is also the eternal Son who upholds all things by His powerful word. Therefore, even when our strength is gone, we can entrust ourselves completely to the One whose hands hold all creation.
Psalm 102:23–25 reminds us that human strength is temporary, but God’s power and faithfulness are everlasting. We may experience seasons when our strength is diminished, our days seem uncertain, and our future feels beyond our control, yet the Lord remains the eternal Creator who holds every moment in His hands. In Jesus Christ, we see the perfect answer to our weakness: the eternal Son entered our frailty, conquered death, and secured everlasting life for all who trust in Him. May we therefore bring our fears, exhaustion, and uncertainty before the Lord without shame, resting in the assurance that our lives are held by the everlasting God. When our strength fails, His strength remains; when our days seem short, His years endure; and when everything around us changes, He remains our unchanging hope.
