Emotional Meditation—By Micah Siemens
“He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved” The psalmist continues his reflection on the majesty of God by turning from the heavens to the earth beneath our feet. The stability of creation is not an accident; it rests upon the wisdom and power of its Creator. Every morning we wake up and walk upon a world that God has established and sustained. We often take this stability for granted because it is so familiar, yet Psalm 104 invites us to see the ordinary through the eyes of worship. The same God who established the foundations of the earth is the God who gives stability to His people when everything around them feels uncertain. There are seasons when our lives seem to be shaking beneath us—relationships change, circumstances become difficult, plans fall apart, and the future becomes unclear. In those moments, we can remember that our confidence does not ultimately rest upon circumstances that can change. It rests upon the God who established the earth itself. When everything around us feels unstable, He remains our firm foundation.

“You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains” The psalmist describes the overwhelming power of the waters, covering even the mountains according to God’s command. The imagery reminds us that creation itself is completely dependent upon the authority of God. The waters that appear vast and uncontrollable are never outside His reach. They rise and move according to His purposes. There is something comforting about this picture because the things that seem enormous to us are never enormous to God. We can face problems that feel like deep waters, situations that seem to rise higher than our ability to endure them. Sometimes grief, fear, disappointment, or uncertainty can feel as though they have covered everything we know. Yet the Lord is not overwhelmed by the depths that overwhelm us. He knows where the waters are, and He remains sovereign over them. When we feel as though we are drowning beneath the circumstances of life, we can cry out to the God who rules over the deep and trust that even the greatest waters are still under His command.
“At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight” With a word from God, the waters retreat. The Creator does not struggle to bring order to His creation; His authority is absolute. What seems powerful and frightening responds immediately to His command. This is a beautiful reminder of the power of God’s Word. He speaks, and creation responds. Throughout Scripture, God’s voice brings light out of darkness, order out of chaos, and life where there was emptiness. We sometimes forget this when we face circumstances that seem impossible to change. We may look at a difficult situation and think that nothing could possibly make a difference. But Psalm 104 reminds us that there is no circumstance beyond the authority of God. He does not need human strength to accomplish His purposes. His power is not limited by what we can see or understand. When we pray and wait upon God, we are not speaking to someone who is powerless to help us. We are bringing our needs before the Creator whose voice commands the waters. Even when He chooses to work differently or more slowly than we desire, we can trust that His power has never diminished.
“The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them” The psalmist describes the earth taking its proper shape according to the boundaries established by God. Mountains rise and valleys descend, each occupying the place God has appointed. Creation is not random or without purpose; it bears the marks of a wise and intentional Creator. There is comfort in knowing that God is a God of order and purpose, especially when our own lives feel chaotic. We may not understand why certain valleys have appeared in our journey or why God has allowed some mountains to stand before us. Yet the Lord sees the whole landscape when we can only see the path immediately in front of us. A valley that feels like an interruption may be part of a journey God is using to shape us. A mountain that seems impossible may become a place where we learn to depend upon His strength. We do not have to understand every detail of God’s purposes before we can trust Him. The God who appointed the mountains and valleys knows exactly where He is leading us, and His wisdom is greater than our limited perspective.
“You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth” The passage ends with a powerful picture of God’s authority over the waters. He establishes a boundary that they cannot cross. The same waters that once covered the mountains are restrained by the command of their Creator. Nothing in creation can move beyond the limits God has established. For us, this becomes a profound reminder that God is not only powerful; He is purposeful. He establishes boundaries, brings order, and preserves what He has made. When life feels chaotic, we can trust that chaos has never taken control away from God. There may be circumstances He permits that we do not understand, but nothing escapes His sovereign care. Psalm 104:5–9 reminds us that the God who established the earth, commanded the waters, raised the mountains, and set boundaries for the seas is the same God who watches over His children. We may encounter deep waters, steep mountains, and difficult valleys, but none of them are outside His authority. When we cannot see the way forward, we can rest in the God who has already established the boundaries. He is our foundation when we are shaken, our refuge when the waters rise, and our faithful Lord when we cannot understand the path before us. The earth is established by His power, the waters obey His voice, and our lives remain safely within His sovereign hands.
