Emotional Meditation—By Micah Siemens
“It will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky” The psalmist concludes God’s covenant promises with another image of permanence and reliability. Just as the moon faithfully appears in the heavens according to God’s design, so His covenant with David was declared to be enduring and secure. The heavens themselves serve as witnesses to God’s faithfulness and consistency. For believers, this verse reinforces the certainty of God’s promises. His word is not fragile or temporary. Yet as the psalm unfolds, a tension begins to emerge. The promises remain firm, but the circumstances surrounding God’s people seem to tell a different story. This contrast mirrors experiences many believers face when God’s promises are clear, yet present realities seem difficult to reconcile with them.

“But You have rejected, You have spurned, You have been very angry with Your anointed one” The tone of the psalm changes dramatically. The writer honestly expresses the pain and confusion that arise when circumstances appear to contradict God’s promises. The covenant king, who had been the recipient of such extraordinary assurances, now seems abandoned. This verse reminds us that Scripture does not ignore human struggles with disappointment and unanswered questions. There are seasons when believers feel as though God is distant, when prayers seem unanswered, and when circumstances appear inconsistent with His promises. The psalmist teaches us that bringing such struggles before God is not an act of unbelief but an expression of faith that refuses to stop seeking Him in the midst of confusion.
“You have renounced the covenant with Your servant and have defiled his crown in the dust” From a human perspective, it seemed as though God’s covenant had failed. The crown, a symbol of authority, honor, and divine blessing, now lay in the dust. Defeat and humiliation had replaced victory and glory. The psalmist is describing what he sees, not what is ultimately true about God’s character. Believers often face similar moments when circumstances seem to suggest that God has forgotten His promises. Dreams collapse, ministries struggle, relationships break, and hopes are disappointed. In such seasons, it can feel as though the crown has fallen into the dust. Yet even when appearances suggest otherwise, God’s faithfulness remains unchanged. What seems like abandonment is often part of a larger story that God is still unfolding.
“You have broken through all his walls and reduced his strongholds to ruins” The imagery here is one of vulnerability and devastation. The defenses that once provided security have been torn down, leaving the kingdom exposed to danger and attack. The psalmist describes a situation where everything that once seemed stable has been shaken. Many believers can relate to such experiences. There are times when the walls we depend upon—our plans, resources, health, or sense of security—suddenly crumble. In those moments, we may feel exposed and uncertain about the future. Yet Scripture repeatedly reminds us that while earthly strongholds can fail, God Himself remains an unshakable refuge. When every visible source of security is removed, we are invited to place our trust more deeply in Him.
Psalm 89:37–40 introduces one of the great tensions of faith: the struggle between God’s promises and painful circumstances. The psalmist does not hide his grief or confusion but brings them honestly before the Lord. These verses remind believers that faith does not require pretending that suffering is easy or that disappointment is insignificant. Instead, faith brings every question, fear, and sorrow into God’s presence. Even when circumstances seem to contradict His promises, God’s character remains trustworthy. The apparent rejection described in these verses is not the final word of the psalm, nor is it the final word of God’s story. In seasons when life feels broken and hope seems distant, believers can hold fast to the assurance that God’s faithfulness extends beyond what we can presently see. His promises remain secure, even when the path before us is difficult to understand.
