“The King in his might loves justice. You have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob” The psalmist now turns our attention from God’s majestic holiness to the righteous character of His reign. The Lord does not rule by arbitrary power or shifting opinion, but by perfect justice. Every decision He makes is rooted in absolute righteousness, and every act reflects His flawless wisdom. In a world where justice is often delayed, distorted, or denied altogether, it is deeply comforting to know that our King delights in what is right. His authority is never abused, His judgments are never biased, and His purposes are always good. Because He loves justice, His people can rest confidently in the certainty that nothing escapes His notice and no wrong will remain unanswered forever.
The psalmist declares that God has “established equity” and “executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.” Throughout Israel’s history, the Lord consistently revealed Himself as the covenant-keeping God who defended the oppressed, corrected His people when they wandered, and faithfully fulfilled His promises despite their repeated failures. His justice was never separated from His mercy, nor His righteousness from His steadfast love. Even His discipline flowed from a heart committed to restoring His people to Himself. This same faithful character remains unchanged today. The God who governed Israel with perfect wisdom continues to govern His church and sovereignly directs every detail of our lives according to His righteous purposes.
“Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he!” Having reflected on God’s righteous rule, the only fitting response is worship. To exalt the Lord is to acknowledge His supreme authority over every area of our lives and to gladly submit ourselves to His perfect will. The imagery of worshiping at His footstool reminds us that although God graciously invites us into His presence, we approach Him with humility and reverence. He alone is worthy of our praise because He alone is perfectly holy. His justice is not cold or impersonal but flows from the beauty of His holy character. Every attribute of God harmonizes perfectly with every other; His holiness magnifies His justice, and His justice displays the perfection of His holiness.
Psalm 99:4–5 reminds us that the God we worship is both infinitely holy and perfectly just. His throne is established upon righteousness, and His reign brings hope to all who trust in Him. As we live in a world longing for justice, we are called not to despair but to fix our eyes upon the King whose judgments are always true. May His righteous character shape our own hearts, leading us to love what is good, pursue what is just, and walk humbly before Him. As we exalt the Lord and bow before His holy throne, may our lives reflect the beauty of His kingdom until the day when His perfect justice is fully revealed and all creation joins in worship before our holy King.
