“The LORD reigns; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!” Psalm 99 opens with another majestic declaration of God’s sovereign reign, but this time the emphasis falls upon His awesome holiness. The Lord is not merely a King among many kings; He is enthroned above all creation, reigning with absolute authority and unmatched glory. The imagery of His throne above the cherubim reminds us that He dwells in perfect holiness, surrounded by heavenly majesty beyond human comprehension. The trembling of the nations and the shaking of the earth are fitting responses to the presence of the Almighty. Yet for those who belong to Him, reverent awe is not accompanied by hopeless fear, but by confident trust in the God whose infinite power is joined with His steadfast love.

“The LORD is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples” Though God graciously revealed His presence among His covenant people, His reign has never been limited by geographical boundaries. He is exalted over every nation, every kingdom, and every generation. Human rulers rise and fall, cultures flourish and fade, but the Lord remains forever on His throne. This truth calls us to lift our eyes above the changing events of history and fix them upon the unchanging King. When the world feels unsettled and the future uncertain, we find lasting peace in knowing that God’s rule is never threatened and His purposes can never fail. His greatness is not diminished by the instability of the world but shines even more brightly against its uncertainty.
“Let them praise your great and awesome name! Holy is he!” The psalmist directs our attention to the holiness of God, the defining beauty of His character. God’s holiness speaks of His perfect purity, His complete separation from all sin, and His absolute moral perfection. There is no flaw in His wisdom, no shadow in His justice, and no limit to His faithfulness. His name is great because His character is perfect. To praise His holy name is to recognize Him for who He truly is and to respond with humble adoration. As we grow in our understanding of His holiness, we become increasingly aware of both our need for His grace and the immeasurable wonder that He has invited us into His presence through His redeeming love.
The repeated declaration, “Holy is he,” reminds us that worship begins with a right vision of God. We do not gather merely to seek comfort, encouragement, or blessing, though He graciously provides all these things. We come first to behold His glory and to honor the One who alone is worthy of our devotion. The more clearly we see God’s holiness, the more deeply we cherish His mercy. The God who is infinitely exalted has drawn near to His people, not because of their righteousness but because of His abundant grace. His holiness does not drive away those who come to Him in faith; rather, it transforms them as they learn to reflect His character in their daily lives.
Psalm 99:1–3 calls us to worship with hearts filled with both reverence and joy. The Lord who reigns over all the earth is the same God who invites His children into fellowship with Himself. His greatness inspires our awe, His holiness calls us to faithful living, and His grace gives us confidence to approach His throne with grateful hearts. May we never lose our sense of wonder before our holy King, but continually exalt His great and awesome name. As we walk in humble obedience and steadfast trust, may our lives become a living testimony to the glory of the Lord who reigns forever, whose holiness is perfect, and whose love endures through all generations.
