Seek first the Kingdom of God…

I love to write! We are building a community of readers and writers that share a passion to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness, and then everything else will follow. This is a place where we express our writing and imagination for His glory.

Emotional Meditation—By Micah Siemens

“He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting” The psalmist now turns our attention to the heavens and the way God has established the rhythms of time. The moon marks the seasons, and the sun follows the course God has appointed for it. Nothing about creation is random or without purpose. Day follows night, seasons come and go, and time moves according to the order established by the Creator. We often wish we could control time, especially when we are facing seasons we would rather hurry through or moments we desperately wish we could hold onto. Yet Psalm 104 reminds us that our lives unfold within God’s appointed order. There are seasons of beginning, seasons of waiting, seasons of change, and seasons of endings. We may not understand why God allows certain seasons to last as long as they do, but we can trust the One who governs time itself. When we feel impatient with where we are in life, we can remember that the God who established the seasons has not lost track of us. He knows the season we are in, and He knows exactly when the next one will come.

“You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about” Darkness arrives according to God’s design, and the creatures of the night become active in their appointed time. There is something mysterious about the nighttime. In the darkness, we cannot see as clearly, and the familiar world can suddenly feel uncertain. Scripture often uses darkness as an image for seasons when we cannot understand what God is doing. There are times when our lives can feel like night—when answers are unclear, prayers seem unanswered, and the path ahead is difficult to see. Yet Psalm 104 reminds us that even darkness exists within God’s order. The night is not outside His sovereignty. God has not disappeared simply because we cannot see as clearly as we would like. He remains present when our circumstances are confusing and when His purposes are hidden from our view. Just as the creatures of the forest know when it is time to move through the darkness, we can trust that God knows how to guide us through seasons when we cannot see the entire path. We may not have the light we want, but we can still trust the God who rules over the night.

“The young lions roar for their prey, seeking their food from God” Even the strength and instincts of the wild animals ultimately point back to God’s provision. The young lions may appear powerful and self-sufficient, yet the psalmist says that they are seeking their food from God. This is a humbling reminder that every creature depends upon the Creator. What appears to be strength is still sustained by God’s provision. We too can easily begin to believe that our lives depend entirely upon our own abilities. We work hard, make plans, solve problems, and provide for ourselves, and there is nothing wrong with responsible effort. But beneath every ability we possess is a God who gives us breath, strength, wisdom, and opportunity. When we begin to think that everything depends upon us, anxiety quickly follows. We were never designed to carry the weight of being our own provider and protector. The young lions remind us that even the strongest creatures look to God for what they need. If the Lord faithfully provides for the creatures of the wilderness, we can trust Him with our own needs as well.

“When the sun rises, they steal away and lie down in their dens” The arrival of morning changes the rhythm of creation. The creatures that moved through the night retreat to their places of rest, while the world prepares for another day. There is something beautiful about the order God has placed into creation. Each creature has its time, its place, and its purpose. The night gives way to morning, activity gives way to rest, and the rhythm begins again. We often struggle with this kind of rhythm because we feel pressure to remain productive at all times. We can feel guilty for resting, believing that stopping means we are falling behind. Yet God Himself has woven rhythms of work and rest into His creation. There are moments when faithfulness means moving forward, and there are moments when faithfulness means lying down and resting in God’s care. Rest is not a failure of faith; sometimes it is an expression of trust. When we sleep, we acknowledge that the world continues even when we are not working. God remains awake. He remains faithful. He remains in control. We can lay down our burdens and trust Him to sustain what we cannot carry through the night.

“Man goes out to his work and to his labor until the evening” The psalmist brings us back to the rhythm of human life. The day begins, people rise, and they go out to their work until evening comes. There is dignity in ordinary labor because work itself is part of the order God established. Most of us will spend much of our lives doing ordinary things—working, caring for others, preparing meals, cleaning, building, teaching, serving, and completing responsibilities that may never receive public recognition. Yet Psalm 104 reminds us that these ordinary rhythms take place under the watchful care of God. Our work matters because it is done within the world He created and under His providence. Psalm 104:19–23 reminds us that God governs the seasons, rules over the darkness, provides for the creatures, gives rest, and establishes the rhythm of our daily labor. Our lives may sometimes feel chaotic, but creation reminds us that God is a God of order. We do not have to control every season, understand every night, or provide for every tomorrow by our own strength. We can faithfully work when it is time to work, rest when it is time to rest, and trust God with everything beyond our control. The God who orders the moon, governs the night, feeds the lions, gives rest, and brings each morning is the same God who faithfully holds our days in His hands.
