Emotional Meditation By Micah Siemens
“The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens!” Having called the servants of the Lord to praise His name, the psalmist now turns our attention to the greatness of the One we worship. The Lord is exalted above all nations, far greater than the kingdoms of this world and far beyond the reach of human power or understanding. The nations rise and fall, rulers come and go, and the things that once appeared unshakable eventually change, but God remains sovereign over all. His glory is not limited by earthly boundaries, human opposition, or the uncertainty of our times. Even when the world around us seems troubled and the future feels uncertain, the Lord is still seated above all that threatens to overwhelm us. There are moments when our problems appear so large that we struggle to see beyond them. A painful diagnosis, a broken relationship, the loss of someone we love, or a long season of unanswered prayer can make our hearts feel small beneath the weight of our circumstances. Yet this verse gently lifts our eyes from what troubles us to the God who reigns above it all. The difficulties we face are real, but they do not diminish His glory or remove Him from His throne. What a comfort it is to remember that the Lord is not overwhelmed by the things that overwhelm us. He sees what we cannot see, understands what we cannot comprehend, and remains in control even when life seems beyond our control. When our hearts grow weary from looking at the troubles around us, we must learn to look again toward the Lord, whose glory is higher than the heavens and whose power is greater than anything we may face.

“Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high” (v. 5). The psalmist asks a question whose answer leaves us in humble wonder: Who can be compared with the Lord our God? There is no one like Him in holiness, majesty, wisdom, or power. No earthly ruler possesses His authority, no human mind can measure the fullness of His wisdom, and no created thing can rival His glory. Yet notice the tenderness in the way the psalmist speaks of Him. He does not refer to God merely as the Almighty or the Most High, but as “the Lord our God.” The One who reigns above all creation is also the One who has drawn near to His people and entered into a relationship with them. His greatness does not make Him distant in the way that earthly greatness so often does. Human power can create separation, and those who occupy positions of authority may become inaccessible to the people who need them most. But the Lord is not like the rulers of this world. He is exalted beyond our understanding, yet He invites us to know Him, trust Him, and rest in His care. When we pray, we come before the One who holds all things in His hands. When we cry out in our weakness, we are not speaking to a God who is indifferent to our needs. When we find ourselves unable to explain the burdens of our hearts, we can still come to Him with the confidence that He knows us completely. How wonderful it is that the God who deserves all honor and worship is also the God to whom we can bring our fears, our disappointments, and our deepest longings. We cannot fully comprehend His greatness, but we can trust His heart. We may not always understand His ways, but we can find peace in knowing that the One who rules over all is our God.
“Who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?” (v. 6). The psalmist continues by drawing our attention to a remarkable truth: the Lord who is exalted above the heavens looks down upon both the heavens and the earth. His greatness is beyond the heights of creation, yet nothing in His creation lies beyond His sight. The One who reigns in majesty is also the One who sees the details of our lives. He sees the tears we wipe away before anyone notices, the burdens we carry in silence, and the prayers we struggle to put into words. He sees the person who feels forgotten, the family facing uncertainty, the believer who continues to pray while waiting for an answer, and the weary soul who wonders whether anyone truly understands. People may overlook our pain, misunderstand our struggles, or fail to recognize the quiet battles we fight each day, but nothing escapes the loving attention of God. His eyes are not limited to the places where human attention is drawn. He sees beyond outward appearances and knows the condition of every heart. Sometimes we may wonder whether our struggles are too small to matter to a God who governs the universe, or whether our suffering has gone unnoticed amid the needs of so many others. This verse reminds us that the Lord is never so exalted that He becomes unaware of His creation. His majesty does not diminish His attention, and His sovereignty does not exclude His personal care. Even when we cannot sense His presence, we can trust that we have not slipped beyond His sight. We may have to wait for His answer, and we may not understand why He permits certain seasons of sorrow, but we can rest in the assurance that our lives are never hidden from Him. The God who looks upon the heavens and the earth sees us exactly where we are, and we can bring our hearts before Him with honesty, reverence, and hope.
Together, these verses invite us to hold two beautiful truths in our hearts: the Lord is exalted above all, and the Lord sees us in our need. His glory is higher than the heavens, His authority extends over every nation, and there is no one who can be compared with Him. Yet this same God looks upon the heavens and the earth, never losing sight of the people He has created and the lives He sustains. We need both truths, especially when we walk through difficult seasons. If we remember only His greatness, we may struggle to believe that He cares about the details of our lives. If we think only about our troubles, we may forget that the One who sees us is powerful enough to sustain us. But Psalm 113:4–6 brings these truths together and teaches us to worship the Lord in both reverence and trust. When the future frightens us, we can remember that He reigns above all nations. When our hearts feel insignificant, we can remember that the God who fills the heavens sees us. When we do not understand His ways, we can rest in the wisdom of the One who knows far more than we do. And when sorrow makes it difficult to pray, we can come before the Lord who is both infinitely great and intimately attentive to our needs. We may never understand everything that happens in this life, and there will be seasons when faith means continuing to trust without seeing the whole picture. But we do not walk through those seasons alone. The Lord remains exalted above all creation, and His eyes remain upon us. Let this truth quiet our anxious hearts, strengthen our weary faith, and remind us that no circumstance is greater than our God and no life is beyond His sight. The One who reigns above the heavens is the One we can trust with every burden we carry, every tear we shed, and every tomorrow we cannot yet see.
